Dark-type Pokemon can be intimidating not only due to their appearance but also their strong physical attacks. If you’re struggling to beat elusive Dark-type Pokemon, this guide on their weaknesses and resistances will certainly come in handy.
Dark-type Pokemon were introduced to trainers with Gen 2 and have been an important part of the franchise ever since thanks to their ability to counter some of the toughest Pokemon out there.
No matter how powerful a Pokemon type is though, there’s always a way to counter it with effective and super-effective moves. Here’s everything you need to know about Dark-type Pokemon weaknesses, resistances, and immunities.
What are Dark-type Pokemon
Dark-type Pokemon were introduced in Gen 2 with Pokemon Gold and Silver to balance the dominant Psychic types that were overpowered in Gen 1. They don’t have many distinguishing features and are easily confused with Ghost-type Pokemon, but they are the most powerful weapon against this type.
One of the most common Dark-type attacks is Bite, which isn’t exclusive to Dark-type Pokemon. It was originally a Normal-type move that shifted with Gen 2. It can be used to exploit Ghost and Psychic-type weaknesses, and can also cause opponents to flinch and not attack the next turn.
Before Gen 4, all Dark-type attacks dealt Special damage, but now they can be physical, depending on the attack.
Greninja is a dual Water and Dark-type Pokemon.
All Dark-type Pokemon weaknesses
Dark-type Pokemon are weak to Bug, Fairy, and Fighting-type attacks. If you need to battle a Dark-type Pokemon, you can rely on any of these types of moves for a swift victory.
It’s worth noting that there aren’t many pure Dark-type Pokemon in the franchise. Most Dark-types have dual-typing, so you should also take their second type into account to find the best counters.
All Dark-type Pokemon resistances
Dark-type Pokemon are resistant to Ghost and Dark-type moves and immune to Psychic-type attacks. Immunities in Pokemon Go work differently than in the rest of the games due to its unique battle mechanics, so Psychic-type attacks can do very little damage to Dark-type Pokemon.
You should avoid using these Pokemon types when battling a Dark-type. However, it’s also important to know if they have dual-typing when picking counters.
