As one of the Team Rocket Leaders in Pokemon Go, Sierra can be tough to beat for both experienced and new players. Here’s everything there is to know about her July 2023 lineup, including weaknesses and best counters to defeat her team.

When Pokemon Go players get their hands on the Rocket Radar by defeating Grunts or completing event-related tasks, they get a chance to face one of the Team Rocket Leaders: Cliff, Arlo, or Sierra. These Leaders change their Pokemon regularly to surprise trainers, so defeating them is never an easy task.

In this guide, we’ll provide details on Sierra’s July 2023 Pokemon lineup with all the information you need to build the best Pokemon Go team to win the battle, including weaknesses and best counters.

How to beat Sierra in Pokemon Go

Sierra doesn’t like to mess around in Pokemon Go and her July 2023 team composed of Shadow Pokemon has some really strong contenders you need to be careful of.

After the Team Go Rocket takeover event in June, Sierra’s lineup changed as seen below:

  • First Battle: Geodude
  • Second Battle: Steelix / Gardevoir / Sableye
  • Third Battle: Gyarados / Houndoom / Victreebel

To beat Sierra, you’ll have to make sure that you have Pokemon that can provide different resistances and super-effective attacks against most of these opponents.

How to counter Geodude in Pokemon Go

Geodude is Sierra’s first choice in battle.

Geodude is a dual Rock and Ground-type Pokemon, which means it’s weak against Fighting, Ground, Steel, Water (4x), Grass (4x), and Ice-type moves. It’s also resistant to Electric, Normal, Flying, Poison, Rock, and Fire-type attacks, so be careful who you pick for this fight.

Since Water and Grass-type attacks have 4x super-effectiveness against Geodude, we recommend picking Pokemon in those categories. Water-type Pokemon might also work against the other two Pokemon Sierra has in store, but can also be a risky bet.

With that in mind, here are some of the best counters to defeat Geodude:

  • Kyogre with Waterfall and Surf.
  • Torterra with Razor Leaf and Frenzy Plant.
  • Swampert with Mud Shot and Hydro Cannon.
  • Kingler with Bubble and Crabhammer.
  • Roserade with Razor Leaf and Solar Beam.

How to counter Sierra’s Steelix, Gardevoir, or Sableye in Pokemon Go

Picking a counter that works with these three Pokemon might be tricky.

As a dual Ground and Steel-type Pokemon, Steelix is weak against Fighting, Fire, Ground, and Water-type attacks. That also means it can resist Bug, Dragon, Fairy, Flying, Normal, Psychic, Steel, Electric, Rock, and Poison-type moves.

Sticking to super-effective moves will do the trick to get rid of Sierra’s Steelix as quickly as possible.

Here are some of the best counters against Steelix:

  • Rhyperior with Mud Slap and Surf.
  • Kyogre with Waterfall and Surf.
  • Charizard with Fire Spin and Blast Burn.
  • Terrakion with Double Kick and Sacred Sword.
  • Galarian Darmanitan with Ice Fang and Overheat.
  • Swampert with Mud Shot and Hyrdo Cannon.

Gardevoir is a dual Psychic and Fairy-type Pokemon, meaning it’s weak against Poison, Ghost, and Steel-type attacks. It will resist Psychic, Fighting, and Dragon-type moves.

Shadow Gardevoir can surprise you with a wide array of attacks, so you should stick to the basics. Exploiting Gardevoir’s vulnerabilities is key to victory, so you should rely mostly on Ghost and Steel-type Pokemon.

Some of the best counters to take Gardevoir down are listed below:

  • Metagross with Bullet Punch and Meteor Mash.
  • Gengar with Lick and Shadow Ball.
  • Melmetal with Thunder Shock and Double Iron Bash.
  • Muk with Poison Jab and Dark Pulse.
  • Chandelure with Hex and Shadow Ball.

Sableye is a dual Dark and Ghost-type Pokemon, which means it’s only weak against Fairy-type moves. This Pokemon is resistant to Normal, Fighting, Psychic, and Poison-type attacks, so you shouldn’t have much problem with your picks.

While Fairy-type Pokemon seem like the way to go, keep in mind that they won’t be able to help you against some of Sierra’s choices.

With that in mind, here are some of the best counters to defeat Sableye:

  • Sylveon with Charm and Moonblast.
  • Gardevoir with Charm and Dazzling Gleam.
  • Obstagoon with Counter and Night Slash.
  • Togekiss with Charm and Ancient Power.
  • Tyranitar with Smack Down and Brutal Swing.
  • Hydreigon with Dragon Breath and Brutal Swing.

How to counter Sierra’s Gyarados, Houndoom, or Victreebel in Pokemon Go

You’ll need very powerful Pokemon to win the battle against Sierra.

Gyarados is a dual Water and Flying-type Pokemon, meaning its only weaknesses are Electric and Rock-type attacks. It will resist Bug, Fighting, Fire, Steel, Water, and Ground-type moves.

Exploiting Gyarados’ weaknesses when you face Sierra in Pokemon Go can be a little tricky, so here are some useful counters to beat it:

  • Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge.
  • Aggron with Smack Down and Stone Edge.
  • Magnezone with Spark and Wild Charge.
  • Raikou with Volt Switch and Wild Charge.
  • Electivire with Thunder Shock and Wild Charge.

As a dual Fire and Dark-type Pokemon, Houndoom is weak against Fighting, Ground, Rock, and Water-type attacks. It’s resistant to Ghost, Steel, Fire, Grass, Psychic, Ice, and Dark-type moves, so be careful with your pick.

Fighting-type Pokemon are your safest bet, but you can also go with not-so-obvious choices relying on powerful Water-types.

These are some of the best counters to choose from:

  • Lucario with Counter and Power-Up Punch.
  • Machamp with Counter and Close Combat.
  • Conkeldurr with Counter and Dynamic Punch.
  • Kyogre with Waterfall and Surf.
  • Rampardos with Smack Down and Rock Slide.
  • Tyranitar with Smack Down and Stone Edge.

Victreebel is a dual Grass and Poison-type Pokemon, so it’s weak against Flying, Fire, Psychic, and Ice-type attacks. Its list of resistances might be a problem since it can take Fairy, Fighting, Water, Electric, and Grass-type moves with ease.

Picking counters for Victreebel can be tricky considering Sierra’s lineup. However, Flying and Fire-type Pokemon can also work against other Sierra’s picks.

Here are some of the best counters to defeat Victreebel:

  • Volcarona with Fire Spin and Overheat.
  • Heatran with Fire Spin and Flamethrower.
  • Moltres with Wing Attack and Sky Attack.
  • Dragonite with Dragon Breath and Superpower.
  • Darmanitan with Fire Fang and Overheat.
  • Alakazam with Confusion and Psychic.

Best team to defeat Sierra in Pokemon Go

Since you can only pick three Pokemon to face Team Rocket Leader Sierra in Pokemon Go, you’ll need to cover different typings to be prepared for whatever she has up her sleeve.

You can choose a Water-type Pokemon to wipe Geodude fast. We recommend going with Swampert since its moves can work very well against Steelix and Houndoom too.

A leveled-up Tyranitar can be a great asset against Gyarados, Houndoom, and even Sableye. Try not to focus your efforts on countering Sableye, though, since it’s one of the most unique type combinations you’ll find in the franchise.

A Fire or Flying-type Pokemon can also help you deal with some of Sierra’s picks, but can also suffer a lot from opponents like Gyarados and Geodude. While you could pick Moltres just to be sure, an all-rounder like Dragonite is probably a safer bet.
